Looking for a Sudbury or Self-Directed School in Montana? We can help

Sudbury schools are built on the belief that young people are naturally curious and capable. Students are trusted to take charge of their own education and to spend their days in ways that are meaningful to them. They learn through play, real-life experiences, conversations, exploration, and by following their interests. From day one, students are part of a community where they’re seen, supported, and treated with respect. In a Sudbury school, everyone—regardless of age—has an equal voice in making rules, solving problems, and shaping the school environment. It’s a place where everyone contributes, everyone matters, and learning happens in all kinds of meaningful ways.

If you’re looking for a Sudbury school in Montana, unfortunately there are no in person programs currently operating. You can check out sudbury-international.org to see if there are any new schools in your area. However, while attending an in person Sudbury program is a wonderful experience, it isn’t feasible for many families for a variety of reasons, and isn’t the only option if you want a Sudbury education.

No Sudbury school nearby? We’ve got you.

If you live in Montana and don’t have access to a local Sudbury school, a virtual Sudbury school might be the right fit for you. The Open School has a virtual program that offers a full Sudbury experience online—open to students no matter where they live. Our supportive staff, flexible structure, and close-knit community create a space where young people can be themselves, follow their interests, and build meaningful relationships. It’s self-directed education with the freedom and support to thrive, all from home.

Our program is fully self-directed and democratic. Students decide for themselves how to spend their time, participate in a student-led process for resolving conflicts, and have an equal vote in school governance. Everything is optional, and students learn through play, exploration, and real-life experience.
