This month, we have welcomed several new students into our virtual program! It’s always a joy to see our community grow and to meet new faces. When new students join, our Virtual Welcome Committee organizes a two-part orientation, providing all the essential information needed for a fun, successful, and educational experience in our program. On Saturday November 16th, Sudbury International, which is a coalition of schools like ours, hosted a Sudbury International Webinar. This was for educators and parents all over the world that are interested in Self-Directed Education. Our founder, Cassi Clausen, presented at this webinar and discussed the value of community and autonomy for students. In the final week of November, we hosted a number of exciting activities and meetings. One of the highlights was our High School Peer meeting, designed for students ages 14 and up. This meeting focused on supporting our teens as they navigate the process of creating their transcripts. Some students are just starting this journey, while others have already gathered lots of information. In addition to these peer meetings, our graduating students continue to meet weekly with their mentors to fine-tune their transcripts. It’s inspiring to see students reflecting on their self-directed experiences and what matters most to them!

We also wrapped up our first six-week class session this month! Several classes ran, offering our students valuable learning opportunities. It’s been a great experience for our virtual community, and we’re excited to kick off our second session of classes in January. In December, we’ll be hosting a showcase event where students have the option to present their projects and share everything they’ve learned from the classes they took. Two of our virtual staff members, Pat and Owen, hosted our third parent circle. They asked our parents to think back on their teenage years and reflect on the experiences that shaped them the most. Each parent had the opportunity to address the prompt in a way in which they felt most comfortable. It was wonderful to see our parent community connect in this meaningful way!

Our virtual and in-person staff also held our third Staff Values Discussion! Our topic this month was “Independence and Service” and the value they both hold in our community. We also had four staff members from the Miami Sudbury School join this discussion and share their insightful thoughts and ideas.

The week before Thanksgiving break some of our students engaged in a silly Mad Libs story about a family Thanksgiving dinner gone wrong. It’s always fun to see our kids get creative with our weekly stories! And that’s a wrap on November! We are so thankful for everyone that contributes to making our community a happy and healthy place! See you next month.
