TV Campus Board

The board of The Open School of Temecula Valley operates in a manner different to most school boards. They respect and uphold the autonomy and authority of the School Meeting in its capacity to govern and operate the school. Board members support the school by raising awareness, raising funds, and serving as a guardian of the school in the larger community.

Shane Sands is a father and Open School parent currently works as an Assistant Principal at Murrieta Canyon Academy. On his personal time he enjoys spending time with family and exploring the outdoors through off road activities, hiking, and being on the water.

Nicole Sands is an Open School parent, current parent volunteer, the founder of Keepbooking, and bookkeeper for The Open School. 

Renee Pickup is a writer, editor, US Marine Corps veteran, and mother to one. She believes deeply in creative freedom and engendering a strong sense of self and a love of learning in children. Her education was mostly self led after high school, and she currently works as the acquisitions editor and publisher at Bronzeville Books, a small press out of Los Angeles.

Jonathan Pickup is a Marine Officer who attended the University of Manchester, England, attaining MA in Archaeology. He is a firm believer in privileging critical thinking over rote learning. 

Matt Dale was one of the original founders of The Open School in 2012 and is now serving as a board member of the Temecula Valley campus. He is also an Open School parent. He graduated from San Diego State University with a B.S. in Social Science and recently earned his M.A. in Education. A high school teacher and coach since 2003, Matt implements democratic principles in his classroom. Matt is driven to expand the opportunities for young people (including his two daughters) to participate in respectful, healthy, authentic self-directed learning.

Gabriel Emmett Moylan is a graduate of Sudbury Valley School and Harvard University, where he studied Philosophy & Literature. He once canoed 900 miles down the Mississippi River without a tent, and currently lives in Venice, California, with his fiance.
